If you seek a rewarding volunteer experience, join the MetroCASH team and help working families in your community save money and increase financial wellbeing. There are a variety of volunteer opportunities with MetroCASH available throughout greater Richmond.

During tax season 2011, 138 volunteers contributed over 4,200 hours to complete 2,093 tax returns and assist local community members become more financially stable.
How does MetroCASH help working families in the greater Richmond Area? With your help! There are a variety of volunteer positions, and no previous experience is required. MetroCASH provides free training for the following positions:
- Tax Preparer: responsible for providing free tax preparation services and electronic filing of federal and state returns at a community based VITA site operated by MetroCASH. Volunteer Tax Preparers who answer tax law questions, and prepare or correct returns must complete free tax law and tax preparation training and successfully pass an Internal Revenue Service (IRS) certification exam at a minimum of the Basic Level. Volunteer Tax Preparers who instruct tax law and/or conduct Quality Reviews of completed returns must obtain certification at the Intermediate level. Click here for a more detailed description
Please also note that the IRS requires that all volunteers preparing taxes be US Citizens, US Nationals or US Resident Aliens and that they provide valid photographic Identification when volunteering to prepare taxes
- Greeter/Screener: responsible for greeting tax clients and creating a welcoming environment at the tax site. Greeter/screener volunteers assist with managing the flow and efficiency of tax site operations, and may assist with screening clients during the initial intake process. No tax law or tax preparation training is required; and greeters/screeners are not required to be IRS certified. Click here for a more detailed description
- Intake Manager: responsible for assisting with all aspects of the intake process. The Intake Manager ensures that the IRS approved intake process is completed for every tax client, and that privacy is maintained and quality review is completed. The Intake Manager is responsible for managing the flow of customers through the tax site. Click here for a more detailed description
- Quality Reviewer: responsible for conducting quality reviews of completed tax returns at a community based tax assistance site operated by MetroCASH. All volunteers who answer tax law questions prepare or correct returns and/or conduct quality reviews must complete and pass the IRS certification test at the Intermediate level. - Assisted Self Tax Prep (ASTP) Coach: responsible for assisting tax payers prepare and electronically file their own federal (and some state) returns using the online software. Free access to computers and the internet is provided at a community based tax site operated by MetroCASH. The role of the ASTP Coach is to guide eligible tax filers through the online free-file process and provide answers to general tax questions. This service helps empower people to take more control over their money, increase their financial literacy and achieve economic independence. ASTP Coaches must attend tax law and tax prep training and obtain IRS Basic level certification. Click here for a more detailed description
- CASH Coach: responsible for connecting tax clients with important financial resources in their communities. The role of the CASH Coach is to promote asset building products, programs and services to encourage saving and financial stability for working families. CASH Coaches advocate for financial and human services needs of clients, and provide knowledge for staff and volunteers on services available. Click here for a more detailed description
- Technology Support Specialist: responsible for set-up of technological equipment, and for trouble-shooting software and hardware issues at a community based tax assistance site operated by MetroCASH.
